Petrol Dispensing Tanks & Petrol Caddies – ATEX
Petrol dispensing tanks and petrol caddies
Petrol has a much lower flash point than diesel. In practice, this means that petrol gives off flammable vapours at room temperature, so any spark can cause an explosion.
Only special Ex/ATEX-certified pumps must therefore be used.
Under ADR, petrol (UN 1203) is assigned to packing group II and transport category 2. One consequence is that the exemption under ADR 1.1.3.6 is limited to 333 litres. Above this threshold, the carriage of petrol is subject to the full provisions of ADR.
Aviation fuels such as jet fuel and avgas have an even more restrictive classification and therefore cannot be dispensed with these petrol units.
