UN Steel Drums 1A1 / 1A2 – 10 to 220 Litres UN Approved Steel Drums – Open Head & Tight Head

Steel drums for dangerous goods or food-grade products. Steel drums are available as open head (removable lid with lever-lock closing ring) or tight head (non-removable head with 2" and 3/4" bungs for liquids). They are available unlined or with lacquered interiors in various formulations, including BPA-free food-grade lacquers.

Steel drums can be UN approved for the carriage of dangerous goods. Open head steel drums have a UN code beginning with 1A2, while tight head drums have a UN code beginning with 1A1. Approvals are further distinguished for solid and liquid dangerous goods.

Examples:
UN approved open head steel drum for solids, packing group II, maximum gross mass 320 kg: 1A2/Y320/S,
Tight head steel drum approved for liquids, packing group I, maximum relative density 1.6, test pressure 100 kPa: 1A1/X1.6/100
Some drums also have a dual solid/liquid approval, making them more versatile. Example: FM212OTADRL

Steel drums are also available with an inner polyethylene receptacle, particularly for corrosive products: these are composite packagings, with UN code 6HA1/...

There are also steel salvage drums designed to hold leaking, damaged or non-compliant packages. Their UN code includes the letter T, e.g. 1A2T
