Fire-resistant safety cabinets for hazardous materials | SD Pack Hazardous Materials Safety Cabinet

The storage of chemicals, pesticides, hazardous corrosive materials, acids, bases, and flammable products is regulated.

Safety cabinets, also known as “safety lockers,” allow hazardous products to be stored and kept close to the workstation, thereby reducing the risks associated with handling, storing, and transferring these chemicals. They are specifically designed to safely store hazardous products. They are characterized by their ability to safely store very specific hazardous products and should not be confused with ordinary cabinets (made of polyethylene or metal), lockers, or shelving units used for storing harmless equipment or materials.

Under no circumstances should the installation of multiple cabinets in a single location be preferred over the construction of a dedicated storage facility better suited for storing large quantities of chemicals. Large-scale storage facilities must therefore be located in premises that comply with applicable regulations. However, even if it is considered “temporary storage,” safety cabinets must meet very strict standards and usage requirements appropriate for the type of products being stored (flammable, acids, bases, poisons, radioactive materials).

The choice of the right safety cabinet is based primarily on two criteria:

  • The nature of the products to be stored: low-risk products, plant protection products, flammable products, corrosive products, chemicals;
  • The volume or type of containers to be stored

Two main standards must be taken into account:

EN 14470-1: This standard, which took effect in October 2004, pertains to the storage of flammable products in laboratories. It applies to cabinets with an internal volume of 1 m³ or less

EN 14470-2: Effective as of April 2006, this standard covers the storage of compressed gas cylinders in laboratories. It applies to cabinets with a total internal volume sufficient to store gas cylinders with a combined capacity of less than 220 liters

Cabinets for Flammable Substances

For flammable products, the flash point (FP) determines the type of safety cabinet to be purchased. These are metal cabinets (or, at a minimum, cabinets made of a material that is difficult to ignite, such as PVC), specially designed to store containers holding extremely and/or highly flammable and combustible liquids in order to protect them against two sources of fire spread: flames and heat.

The flash point is the minimum temperature at which a liquid, under atmospheric pressure, emits enough vapor that, when mixed with air, can ignite in the presence of a flame. The lower the flash point, the more flammable the product is. The choice of cabinet will depend on its fire resistance.

These cabinets are characterized by:

- door seals, heat-expanding gaskets, and fire dampers ensure protection against flames
- the “double wall” (metal wall + insulating materials) provides protection against heat.

The integrity and proper functioning of the cabinet’s ventilation system are very important: the ventilation system must under no circumstances compromise the cabinet’s fire resistance characteristics. For example, if the cabinet’s ventilation openings are not equipped with adequate and effective fire dampers, the ventilation ducts must have the same fire resistance rating as the safety cabinet.

Flash Point Fire Resistance Duration

Gas cylinders Safety cabinet for gas cylinders, compliant with EN 14470-2

Cabinet for Other Hazardous Materials (Acids, Bases, and Corrosive Substances)

Different types of products must be separated to prevent contact: (Acids, bases, flammable solvents, oxidizers, corrosive substances).

Products may be stored in the same cabinet provided they are placed in separate compartments.
Safety cabinets must be equipped with well-designed and well-maintained ventilation systems to effectively remove flammable or toxic vapors and thereby reduce the risk of fire and health

problems. There are two main types of cabinets for storing corrosive products:
  • Low-corrosive products: You can choose cabinets made of steel with high-density polyethylene or PVC liners on the shelves and in the spill containment tray
  • Highly corrosive substances (nitric, sulfuric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric acids, etc.): You must use a cabinet made of high-density polyethylene or cellular PVC.

Safety cabinets for toxic and multi-hazard materials

These cabinets allow you to store different types of hazardous materials in the same location. Each product category (flammable, toxic, corrosive, etc.) has its own compartment to prevent incompatible materials from mixing and causing explosions, toxic vapors, etc.

These safety cabinets comply with several regulations and standards:
- Article R.5132-66: Toxic substances must be stored in a specific, lockable area designated for that purpose.
- Article R.5132-68: Products that are incompatible with one another must be stored in separate cabinets or compartments.
- Order of February 2, 1998, on classified facilities: Any product capable of causing water or soil pollution must be placed on a containment system.
- European Standard EN14470-1: Flammable products stored in the laboratory must be stored in one or more cabinets with a minimum fire resistance of 15 minutes.

Safety cabinets for plant protection products and hazardous materials

These cabinets are designed for the storage of plant protection products (pesticides, fungicides, etc.) that may cause pollution or pose a hazard to humans. They must be ventilated and kept locked.
